About the Artwork
Urban Shoreline is a stunning 36" x 48" acrylic painting by Fraser Brinsmead created on canvas. Brinsmead skillfully depicts one of Edmonton's beloved riverfront scenes, featuring the iconic Rossdale Power Plant with its unique red brick facade and tall white smokestacks alongside the gracefully modern lines of the Walterdale Bridge. This composition showcases the evolution of Edmonton's infrastructure, from the historic High Level Bridge and Dudley B. Menzies Bridge, which add layers of depth to the image, to contemporary landmarks like The Pearl residential tower rising in the backdrop. The golden dome of the Alberta Legislature Building anchors the scene, weaving a visual story of Edmonton's transition from industrial roots to contemporary urban sophistication.
Fraser utilizes a bright and cheerful colour palette, primarily highlighting cerulean and cobalt blues that reflect the North Saskatchewan River's smooth surface, contrasted by warm golden and peach hues illuminating the sky, reminiscent of the golden hour. With his architectural background, Brinsmead effectively renders the brick details of the Rossdale Power Plant and the steel cable structure of the Walterdale Bridge with striking clarity, all while maintaining the painting's artistic essence. The rich emerald and forest greens of the esteemed river valley provide a natural framing effect that softens the urban landscape, while perfect reflections in the still water amplify the visual impact of the Power Plant's smokestacks and The Pearl's modern outline. The contrast between the historic red brick of Rossdale and the sleek curves of the Walterdale Bridge encourages a vibrant dialogue between Edmonton's past and present. Light plays a vital role, with warm reflections shimmering on the water's surface, accentuating the bridge's architectural beauty and generating depth and movement within this Edmontonian moment of urban serenity.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
