About the Artwork
Rivière Perdue is a 64" × 50" acrylic and gel medium painting on canvas by Michel Monett, presenting a large-format mountain waterfall descending through a canyon of dark rock into a foreground pool, with lit ridgelines and a blue-grey sky above.
Monett’s use of acrylic and gel medium creates raised surface texture across the water, rock faces, and surrounding landscape forms. This material quality gives the painting a pronounced physical surface, with impasto passages that are most visible when viewed in person or from a closer distance.
Measuring 64 inches tall, the painting has a vertical format suited to a feature wall, stairwell, entryway, or principal room where a single large artwork can define the surrounding space. Its height, textured surface, and contrasting colour fields allow the waterfall, canyon walls, ridgelines, and sky to read clearly from both near and farther viewing distances.

Accessibility Description
The composition is a portrait-oriented painting of a mountain waterfall scene. The sky occupies the upper portion of the canvas in blue-grey with large white cloud formations and a warm cream and pale yellow area at the upper centre. Below the sky, two mountain ridgelines are visible. The right ridgeline is long and rendered in orange-gold and mauve, while the left ridgeline carries deep orange-red and mauve tones. A dense mixed conifer stand in dark green and purple occupies the right mid-upper area. On the left, the slope is rendered in orange-red. At the centre of the composition, several tall dead standing trees with pale grey-white trunks and sparse upper branches rise vertically. Below the ridgelines and tree line, the terrain descends into a canyon where dark purple-maroon rock faces flank a central waterfall. The waterfall splits into two channels before dropping over the rock ledge. Green vegetation appears along the upper ledges of the canyon walls. The falls are rendered in white and pale blue impasto marks. In the foreground, a dark pool in deep maroon, navy, and near-black occupies the lower canvas. Two pale grey-white fallen logs cross the pool diagonally. The artist's signature, "Monett," appears in red in the lower right of the canvas.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
