About the Artwork

Petals and Glass is a 20" × 20" is an acrylic on board painting by Glen Semple (1960–). The composition presents red and pink poppies, a blue delphinium, a white daisy, and other garden flowers arranged in a clear glass jar filled with water.

Rendered with attention to form, colour, and surface detail, the painting places the flowers against a softly blurred background of pale grey-blue tones. The transparent jar reveals stems and leaves below the waterline, with subtle distortions created by the curved glass and water. Reflected highlights define the rim, sides, and base of the jar, while the flowers remain sharply defined, contrasting with the softly focused background.

Accessibility Description

The painting is square in format and presents a floral arrangement against a softly blurred background composed of pale grey, blue, and white tones. Large out-of-focus glass forms appear near both sides of the composition, creating a simple setting behind the flowers. Gentle variations in tone provide depth without introducing additional objects.

At the centre of the painting is a clear cylindrical glass jar filled approximately halfway with water. The wide rim catches reflected light, while the transparent sides reveal green stems and leaves extending below the waterline. The curved glass and water slightly alter the appearance of the submerged stems, creating visible distortions. Reflections continue beneath the jar on the smooth supporting surface.

The bouquet includes several flowers arranged at different heights. A large red poppy occupies the left side of the arrangement, with additional red blossoms extending toward the far left and rear. Near the centre is a bright blue delphinium with a pale centre and darker blue outer petals. A large pink poppy appears on the right side, accompanied by a small white daisy positioned slightly below it. Yellow flowers are partially visible behind the bouquet. Petals show fine folds and subtle variations in colour, while dark stamens and green foliage provide additional detail throughout the arrangement.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
