About the Artwork

Clair de Brume is a 24" × 36" acrylic on canvas painting by Michel Monett. The composition presents a rocky boreal shoreline with moving water in the foreground and a large rock mass rising across the right of the midground, under a blue and mauve sky.

Moving water occupies the lower canvas in blue, lavender, and white, with thick impasto marks. On the left, a rocky promontory carries two conifers — one retaining sparse foliage, one bare — above green-toned vegetation. To the right, angular rock formations fill the midground, their upper surfaces lit in pink and salmon against deep purple and dark brown. Red linear marks run through the rock faces and tree forms. Pink cloud formations cross the upper blue sky. Gel medium texture is visible across the full surface.

Accessibility Description

The painting is horizontal in format, wider than tall. The overall palette comprises deep blue, purple, and mauve, with areas of pink, salmon, and white throughout.

The sky fills the upper portion of the composition. It is painted in medium to deep blue. Pink and mauve cloud formations extend across the upper register.

In the midground, a large mass of angular rock formations rises across the right two-thirds of the composition. The rock surfaces are rendered in deep purple, dark brown, and near-black. Pink and salmon tones appear on the upper planes. Red linear marks run through the rock faces. Dark tree forms are visible at the upper right edge.

On the left, a rocky promontory extends into the midground. Two conifer trees stand on its surface. One retains sparse foliage; one is bare with extended branches. Green marks indicate low vegetation at the base. The promontory rock is rendered in purple and dark blue.

The foreground is occupied by moving water painted in blue, lavender, and white. Impasto marks describe the movement of the current across the lower canvas. White paint is applied thickly in areas to indicate surface agitation. The artist's signature appears in red in the lower right area of the canvas.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
