About the Artwork
A Gathering of Roses is a 12" x 12" acrylic painting by Glen Semple, created on linen stretched over a wood board. Semple, celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and fascination with glass and reflection, captures the timeless beauty of roses arranged in a clear water-filled jar. The composition celebrates the ordinary transformed—red blooms, tender buds, and delicate stems presented with striking clarity and elegance.
The painting's balance of crisp realism and luminous colour draws the viewer in. Light refracts across the jar, highlighting the translucence of glass and the softness of layered petals. Semple's refined technique and sense of harmony invite contemplation, turning a simple bouquet into a meditation on beauty, stillness, and the fleeting grace of fresh flowers.

Accessibility Description
The composition centres on a clear glass jar filled with water, holding a small arrangement of roses and buds. Three roses dominate the bouquet: one fully opened bloom on the right, its petals unfurling in layers of deep crimson; a slightly smaller rose to the left, partially open with visible folds of red curling outward; and a more compact bloom near the centre, still in the process of opening. Two slender buds rise from the cluster, one nestled close between the flowers and another reaching upward beyond the rim of the jar, suggesting growth and continuation.
The jar is transparent, with ridges that catch and refract light. Stems are visible through the water, their green tones bending slightly due to the curved glass. Subtle reflections shimmer on the jar's surface, emphasizing its clarity and solidity. The base rests on a smooth reflective surface, echoing soft highlights of the jar and flowers above.
Behind the arrangement, the background fades into grey-blue tones with a slight gradient, providing gentle depth without distraction. The painting is square in format, with a narrow black frame edged in metallic trim, focusing attention firmly on the roses.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
