About the Artwork

Winter Street Hockey is a 10" × 30" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting children playing street hockey on a snow-covered residential street lined with colourful houses and parked cars.

The houses along the street carry a range of colour — purple, pink, yellow-green, and orange — set against white snow and a pale sky. The parked vehicles add further colour accents in yellow, blue, and gold. Shadows fall in pale blue and grey across the snow-covered road, with the bare trees between the houses adding dark vertical accents to the composition.

Charlesworth renders the snow with short, layered strokes of white and pale blue, building texture across the road and surrounding banks. The houses and parked cars are painted with more compact, flattened strokes of colour, while the bare trees are described with thin, dark branching lines. The hockey players in the foreground are rendered as small, simplified figures with minimal detail.

Accessibility Description

This wide, horizontal oil painting, shown in a silver and gold frame, depicts a snow-covered residential street. In the upper portion of the canvas, bare trees rise against a pale sky, their branches dusted with snow. Below the trees, a row of houses lines the street: a red house at far left, followed by houses in purple, pink, yellow-green, and orange, with additional rooftops visible at the right edge. Several vintage cars are parked along the street in yellow, blue, and gold. Snowbanks bank up against the houses and fences in thick white and pale blue paint. In the foreground, the snow-covered street occupies the lower portion of the composition. Several children in winter clothing play hockey, gathered in a small group near the centre of the scene, with hockey sticks visible and a goal net set up nearby. One child stands apart from the group, closer to the parked cars. The road surface is built from layered strokes of white, grey, and pale blue suggesting packed and rutted snow. The artist's signature appears in the lower right corner of the canvas.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
