Whispers in the Sky is a 32" × 32" oil painting on canvas by Richard Cole (b. 1968), presenting a square-format Prairie canola landscape beneath a pale blue sky carrying thin, featherlike cloud forms, with a distant treeline marking the horizon.

The sky occupies the upper portion of the square canvas, painted in pale blue with subtle gradations of colour. Thin cloud forms drift across the upper register, their featherlike edges rendered with light, precise brushwork. The horizon is marked by a low, dark treeline running across the full width of the composition. Below, the canola field extends from the horizon into the foreground in a broad band of yellow-gold.

The foreground canola is handled with textured brushwork, individual blossoms distinguishable at close range. The mid-ground field smooths into an even band as it recedes toward the treeline. The sky surface is handled with fine gradations and the cloud forms are painted with a lighter touch than Cole's storm-based Prairie works.

Richard Cole studied oil painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. Born in Edmonton, he has developed a sustained body of Prairie landscape work alongside his better-known Northwest Coast subjects. His paintings are held in corporate and private collections worldwide.
