About the Artwork
When Hope Breaks Through is a 36" × 48" oil painting on canvas by Richard Cole (b. 1968), presenting a Prairie canola field beneath a storm sky in which a break of pale light is visible through the cloud cover.
The horizon runs low and level across the lower third of the canvas, granting the sky the greater share of the picture plane. Storm cloud cover fills the upper register, moving from slate-grey to midnight blue in the lower cloud mass. Within the cloud formation, a break opens to reveal pale blue-white light, its edges defined by the surrounding darker cloud forms. The canola field below holds its yellow across the full width of the canvas against the weight of the sky above.
The foreground canola is handled with textured strokes, clusters of blossoms built up with short impasto marks in yellow and yellow-green against a darker green ground. The mid-ground field smooths as it recedes toward the horizon. The cloud forms in the sky are rendered with blended, layered brushwork, the break of light painted with softer edges than the surrounding cloud mass.
Richard Cole studied oil painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. Born in Edmonton, he has developed a sustained body of Prairie landscape work alongside his better-known Northwest Coast subjects. His paintings are held in corporate and private collections worldwide. When Hope Breaks Through belongs to Cole's storm Prairie series and is distinguished by the visible break of light within the cloud cover.

Accessibility Description
The painting is horizontal in orientation, wider than it is tall. A straight horizon line runs across the lower third of the canvas. Above the horizon, storm cloud cover fills the upper two-thirds of the picture plane. The cloud mass ranges from slate-grey in the upper register to near-black midnight blue in the lower cloud layer above the horizon. Within the cloud cover, a break is visible, revealing pale blue-white light with soft edges against the surrounding darker cloud. Below the horizon, a canola field in bloom extends across the full width of the canvas in yellow tones. In the foreground, clusters of canola blossoms are rendered with short impasto brushwork in yellow and yellow-green against a darker green ground. The mid-ground field is smoother and more even as it recedes toward the horizon. The canvas edges are dark and finished, and the work is displayed without a frame.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
