About the Artwork

Twilight Contemplation is a 48" × 60" acrylic painting by Paul Jorgensen (b. 1947) created on canvas. The composition shows a terrace overlooking a narrow canal and bridge, with round lanterns suspended from a foreground tree above a table set near a curved stone wall.

A vertical tree trunk anchors the right side of the composition while the terrace wall and canal guide the view inward toward the bridge and the clustered buildings beyond. Several lanterns hang along a line attached to the branches, each rendered as a circular form with pale yellow centres and orange outlines.

Across the canal, simplified building forms rise in stacked rows of pink, orange, and red tones, punctuated by small windows and lower-level arches. The canal surface is painted in blue-green tones, and a small white boat appears beneath the bridge arch.

On the terrace in the foreground, a round table covered with a white cloth sits beside a lavender-coloured chair. A seated figure appears near the terrace edge, positioned beside the table and facing toward the canal. Potted plants and foliage appear along the left side of the terrace.

Green leaves and branches spread across the upper portion of the canvas, framing the architecture and lanterns. Layered brushstrokes and areas of visible underpainting remain present across the surface.

Accessibility Description

The painting presents a terrace overlooking a canal bordered by rows of buildings. In the background, stacked structures in pink, orange, red, and yellow tones fill the upper portion of the canvas. Small rectangular windows and several dark arch shapes appear along the lower parts of the buildings. A pale bridge crosses the canal near the centre, forming a curved arch above the water. A small white boat is visible beneath the bridge.

In the middle ground, a curved blue-green wall separates the terrace from the canal below. A large tree trunk stands on the right side of the composition and curves upward through the image. Its surface is painted with layered strokes of turquoise, blue, and darker accents. Branches extend across the upper canvas and carry clusters of simplified green leaves. Several round lanterns hang along a thin line between the branches, each shown as a yellow circle with an orange outline.

In the foreground, a round table covered with a white cloth stands on turquoise paving stones beside a lavender-coloured chair. A seated figure appears near the terrace edge facing toward the canal. Additional plants and foliage appear along the left side of the terrace. The artist’s signature is visible at the lower right.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
