About the Artwork
The Warming Fire is a 16" × 20" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting children playing hockey on a backyard rink, with houses and a snowman nearby beneath an evening sky.
The sky above the rink is painted in deep blue tones with small white marks indicating stars. The houses in the background carry patches of warm yellow light from their windows, standing out against the surrounding blue-white snow. The ice surface is built from layered strokes of blue, white, and pale purple, reflecting the darker tones of the evening sky above.
Charlesworth applies short, directional strokes to describe the swirling texture of the ice beneath the skaters. The snowbanks and rooftops are built from thick, layered white and pale blue paint, while the bare trees are rendered as dark, angular strokes against the sky. The figures on the ice are painted as small, simplified blocks of colour, with the snowman and walking figures rendered in a similarly compact manner.
Rod Charlesworth is a Canadian painter based in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. Largely self-taught, with early studies at Okanagan College, his practice developed from an initial interest in Surrealism toward Impressionism. His subject matter spans landscapes and community scenes across Western and Northern Canada, with attention to colour and paint handling. Charlesworth's work is held in corporate and private collections in Canada and the United States and is represented by galleries across the country. The Warming Fire continues his recurring focus on community hockey and winter gathering scenes.

Accessibility Description
This oil painting, presented in a black frame, shows a winter evening scene. The upper portion of the canvas contains a deep blue night sky dotted with small white stars. Below the sky, a row of houses sits along the top of a snow-covered rise: a yellow house with lit windows stands at centre, with a brown house to its left and additional rooftops visible further right. Bare trees rise on either side of the houses, their branches dusted with snow. A snowman stands in the middle ground near a bench, and two adult figures walk together nearby. The hillside descends toward the foreground in thick, pale blue and white snow. In the foreground, a cleared rink occupies the lower half of the composition. Several children in colourful winter clothing play hockey across the ice, holding hockey sticks and gathered in a small group. One figure stands near the edge of the rink watching the game. The ice surface shows swirling blue and white brushwork suggesting skate marks. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner of the canvas.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
