About the Artwork
Sunset Veranda Hillside is a 24" x 24" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting a hillside of layered homes beneath a setting sun.
The sky is painted in golden yellows, vibrant purples, and deep blues, with a subtle scattering of white clouds evoking the shifting light of the setting sun. These warm tones extend across the rows of homes arranged along the hillside, tying the sky and the buildings together within a single warm palette. The layered arrangement of the homes allows the sunset colours to play across multiple rooflines and walls throughout the composition.
Charlesworth's thick impasto brushwork brings a tactile quality to the colourful homes, with the raised paint enhancing the depth and dimensionality of the layered rooftops and walls. This paint handling gives the hillside buildings a textured surface, distinguishing individual homes from one another through variation in the built-up paint rather than through outline alone.
Rod Charlesworth is a Canadian painter based in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. Largely self-taught, with early studies at Okanagan College, his practice developed from an initial interest in Surrealism toward Impressionism. His subject matter spans landscapes and community scenes across Western and Northern Canada, with attention to colour and paint handling. Charlesworth's work is held in corporate and private collections in Canada and the United States and is represented by galleries across the country. Sunset Veranda Hillside continues Charlesworth's recurring focus on layered residential hillsides set against colourful evening skies.

Accessibility Description
This oil painting shows a hillside of homes at sunset. In the upper portion of the composition, the sky is painted in golden yellow, purple, and deep blue, with a scattering of white cloud suggesting the shifting light of the setting sun. Below the sky, rows of homes are arranged in layers up the hillside, each catching some of the warm tones from the sky above. The homes are painted in a range of colours, described as colourful in the existing product text, though individual building colours beyond the general palette are not specified. The paint throughout the composition is applied thickly, in a raised, textured manner, giving the rooftops and walls of the homes a tactile surface quality. This textured brushwork distinguishes individual homes from one another across the layered hillside. The overall composition combines the warm golden, purple, and blue tones of the sunset sky with the varied, colourful surfaces of the homes below. No specific figures, vehicles, or wildlife are described in the existing product text, and no signature location is noted.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
