The Hills is a 20" × 36" oil on canvas by Steve R. Coffey. Coffey frequently draws from prairie geography and shifting sky conditions, using textured mark-making and layered colour to interpret the open landscape. In this painting, a broad sweep of sky rises above a low strip of rolling hills, creating a composition grounded in land yet dominated by changing light.

The foreground presents a field of greens, browns, and small orange accents, rendered with thick, broken strokes. A low rise of hills runs horizontally through the middle of the canvas, transitioning into a band of pale yellow and muted orange near the horizon. Above this, the sky occupies most of the surface in layered tones of grey, blue, white, and violet, with areas of denser pigment interspersed with thinner, brushed passages. Vertical streaks and clustered marks suggest shifting conditions across the sky while maintaining a clear division between land and air. The work rewards extended viewing.
