About the Artwork

Special Occasion is a 36" x 48" oil on canvas by Dana Irving. Inspired by Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Irving reimagines the iconic alpine setting with her signature stylized forms. A circle of brightly coloured canoes gathers on turquoise water beneath rolling green hills and snow-tipped peaks, transforming the familiar landscape into a playful celebration of colour and form.

The canoes radiate outward in vivid reds, yellows, blues, and greens, creating a festive contrast against the cool tones of the lake and mountains. Flowing contours and softened geometry infuse the composition with Irving’s distinctive voice—often described as “Emily Carr meets Dr. Seuss”—offering a joyful interpretation of one of Canada’s most treasured wilderness landmarks.

Accessibility Description

This large horizontal oil painting portrays a stylized mountain lake scene. The top third of the composition is filled with pale blue sky streaked by long, horizontal white clouds that sweep gently from left to right. Beneath the sky, jagged mountains rise across the horizon in cool greys, blues, and whites. The peaks are softened into flowing, curved shapes, with broad areas of snow clinging to their upper slopes. In front of the mountains, rounded green hills descend toward the waterline, painted in smooth, saturated tones of emerald and sage, with darker shading along the folds.

In the middle ground, a rocky outcrop juts into the lake. On this rock stands a single exaggerated evergreen tree, tall and slender with tiered triangular boughs. Its dark green silhouette contrasts against the lighter tones of the hills and mountains behind it. The tree appears isolated, emphasizing its vertical presence within the horizontal landscape.

The foreground is dominated by the turquoise surface of the lake, which stretches across the lower half of the canvas. At the centre, eight canoes float in a perfect circle, their pointed ends radiating outward like petals. Each canoe is painted in a vivid solid colour—red, orange, yellow, green, or blue—forming a bright ring that contrasts with the cool water. Subtle reflections appear beneath them, softening their edges. The composition is framed without visible shoreline, drawing focus to the symmetry of the canoes, the rising mountains, and the open sky above.
