About the Artwork

Shades of Winter Fun is a 12" × 36" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting children ice skating on a frozen pond, with a horse-drawn sleigh and a snow-covered village beyond.

The composition is built from cool blues across the snow and ice, set against a clear blue sky. The village houses in the background carry small areas of warm colour — yellow, pink, and orange siding — that stand out against the surrounding white and blue tones. The frozen pond in the foreground is rendered in layered blues and whites, with darker blue shading marking the texture of the ice beneath the skaters.

Charlesworth builds the snow and ice with short, layered strokes of white, pale blue, and grey, creating texture across the pond and the surrounding hillside. The village houses and trees are rendered with smaller, more compact marks, while the sleigh and skating figures are painted as simplified blocks of colour with minimal detail. The evergreen trees at the left edge are built from dense, dark green strokes contrasting with their snow-covered branches.

Accessibility Description

This wide, horizontal oil painting shows a winter village scene. In the upper portion, a clear blue sky stretches across the composition. Below the sky, a village sits along the top of a snow-covered hill: a white church with a steeple stands at the centre, flanked by houses painted in yellow, pink, and orange. Bare and snow-covered evergreen trees surround the buildings. A path leads from the village down the hill, where a horse-drawn sleigh carrying several bundled passengers makes its way toward the foreground. The hillside is covered in thick white and pale blue snow, its surface built from layered brushstrokes. In the lower portion of the painting, a frozen pond occupies the foreground, its surface a mix of blue, white, and grey tones. Several children in colourful winter clothing skate across the ice in pairs and small groups, their bodies rendered as small, simplified figures. Tall evergreen trees with snow-laden branches stand at the left edge of the composition, framing the scene. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner of the canvas.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
