About the Artwork

Resilience and Renewal is a 36" × 54" oil painting on canvas by Richard Cole (b. 1968), presenting a Prairie landscape in which a solitary bare tree stands within a blooming canola field, with reflective water visible in the foreground and a cloud-filled sky above.

The bare tree is positioned left of centre in the composition, its branching form rising above the canola field and against the sky. The surrounding canola is in full bloom, the yellow field extending to the horizon on both sides of the tree. In the foreground, a body of water reflects the sky and the canola above it, its surface smooth against the textured field. Cloud cover fills the upper register above the open horizon.

The canola foreground is handled with textured brushwork, individual blossoms visible at close range. The water surface is rendered more smoothly, its reflective quality indicated by the mirroring of colour and light from above. The bare tree is painted with precise branching detail against the sky behind it.

Richard Cole studied oil painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. Born in Edmonton, he has developed a sustained body of Prairie landscape work alongside his better-known Northwest Coast subjects. His paintings are held in corporate and private collections worldwide. Resilience and Renewal is among his Prairie works to combine a bare tree subject with water reflection in the foreground.

Accessibility Description

The painting is horizontal in orientation, wider than it is tall. A horizon line runs across the middle of the canvas. Above the horizon, cloud cover fills the upper register in layered grey and white forms. Below the horizon, a broad field of yellow canola blossoms extends across the canvas. A solitary bare tree with branching form stands left of centre, rising from the canola field and above the horizon line against the sky. In the foreground, a body of calm water occupies the lower portion of the canvas, its surface reflecting the sky and canola tones above. The canola around the water is rendered with textured brushwork in yellow and yellow-green. The canvas edges are dark and finished, and the work is displayed without a frame.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
