Heavy rain sweeps across the prairie from dark clouds massed along the upper edge of the composition, falling in visible curtains that move from left to right over fields below. Coffey captures the moment when weather dominates the landscape, the rain's passage rendering distant features soft while the foreground fields hold their colour beneath the storm.

The sky fills most of the canvas with turbulent clouds built in deep blues, greys, and whites, their edges churning where darker masses meet lighter formations. Diagonal brushstrokes create the rainfall itself, pale blue and grey streaks that descend from the cloud base toward the land. Below, the prairie unfolds in horizontal bands: browns, greens, yellows, and oranges marking cultivated fields that stretch across the lower portion.
