Rain March | 40" x 72"
About the Artwork
Rain March is a 40" × 72" oil painting on canvas by Steve R. Coffey. Heavy rain sweeps across the prairie from dark clouds massed along the upper edge of the composition, falling in visible curtains that move from left to right over fields below. Coffey captures the moment when weather dominates the landscape, the rain's passage rendering distant features soft while the foreground fields hold their colour beneath the storm.
The sky fills most of the canvas with turbulent clouds built in deep blues, greys, and whites, their edges churning where darker masses meet lighter formations. Diagonal brushstrokes create the rainfall itself, pale blue and grey streaks that descend from the cloud base toward the land. Below, the prairie unfolds in horizontal bands: browns, greens, yellows, and oranges marking cultivated fields that stretch across the lower portion. Coffey's impasto technique creates pronounced texture throughout, with thick paint ridges defining both the sculptural clouds above and the layered earth below.

Accessibility Description
A wide horizontal prairie landscape showing a rainstorm in progress. The upper two-thirds of the canvas shows dark storm clouds in deep blues, greys, and charcoal tones along the top edge, with lighter blue and white cloud formations below. Diagonal streaks of pale blue and grey paint create visible rainfall moving from left to right across the sky. The rain appears as vertical and diagonal lines descending from the cloud mass. The lower third shows prairie fields in horizontal bands of brown, green, yellow, and orange, representing cultivated land. Paint is applied very thickly throughout with visible ridges and texture, particularly in the cloud formations and field surfaces. Pink and purple tints appear within some cloud areas.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
