About the Artwork

Pastoral is a 24" x 30" acrylic painting by Madison Hart created on canvas. This work highlights Hart’s love of whimsical villages, where brightly coloured houses, flowering trees, and lively gardens create a serene yet playful atmosphere. The title reflects the charm of country living, offering viewers a joyful escape into a world of vibrant colour and gentle storytelling.

In this painting, Hart balances bold architectural shapes with flourishing organic detail. Red, blue, teal, and white houses line a winding path, their windows glowing warmly as if lit from within. A tall blossoming tree rises at the centre, surrounded by rolling fields where chickens and sheep roam, adding pastoral touches to the scene. The foreground bursts with a dense field of white daisies, speckled with hints of yellow and green. Hart’s palette is cheerful and layered, and her distinctive approach merges decorative pattern with an inviting sense of harmony, making the piece an uplifting presence in any space.

In the foreground, a dense field of small white daisies fills the lower half of the canvas, their yellow centres and green stems adding texture and depth. Rising from the middle ground is a tall tree with a brown trunk and branches tipped with soft pink blossoms, anchoring the centre of the painting. To the left, houses are painted in deep blue and bright red, each with rows of rectangular windows. To the right, teal and white houses frame the tree, with one doorway flanked by potted flowers and another accented by a rounded arch. Behind the main buildings, smaller homes and barns are scattered across rolling green hills. A winding path leads through the village, connecting doors and courtyards. Animals, including chickens and grazing sheep, appear along the path and in the fields, reinforcing the pastoral theme. The background shows open sky with soft clouds, rendered in pale blue and white. The overall arrangement combines structured architectural forms with lush natural detail, resulting in a cheerful, idyllic village scene full of movement and life.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
