Founded in 1975, West End Gallery has been a cornerstone of Edmonton's arts community for five decades. Located in the heart of Alberta's capital, we take pride in our deep roots and our commitment to showcasing exceptional artwork from talented artists across Canada.

About the Artwork

Off to the Rink is a 12" x 24" acrylic painting on panel by Peter Wyse. Known for his whimsical style and layered technique, Wyse captures the charm of everyday Canadian life with humour and warmth. In this scene, a young boy in a hockey jersey and cap heads off to the rink, skates slung over his shoulder and stick in hand, while an elderly neighbour strolls past with his dog. The brightly coloured houses and stylized tree add playful character to the neighbourhood setting.

Wyse’s process of layering and sanding acrylic paint creates rich textures and subtle depth within his flat, illustrative style. His palette of soft blues, greens, and warm earth tones highlights the lively characters and gives the work a lighthearted spirit. With its blend of nostalgia and community spirit, this piece celebrates the small moments that connect generations and bring joy to everyday routines.

Accessibility Description The painting is a rectangular 12" x 24" panel with a stylized, cartoon-like composition. Against a pale blue sky, three small houses line the background. The central house is teal with a blue door, flanked by a golden tree to the right and additional houses with peaked roofs in grey and white. In the foreground, two figures and a dog occupy the sidewalk. On the left, an older man with a grey moustache, black hat, red sweater, and dark trousers walks a white dog with black spots. The dog faces right, tail raised, tongue slightly out. To the right, a young boy in a blue and orange hockey jersey, striped pants, and ball cap strides toward the right edge, carrying a hockey stick over his shoulder and a pair of skates hanging from it. The simple, rounded forms and softened edges emphasize playfulness and clarity, while the flat green strip of grass and grey sidewalk provide grounding. The artist’s name, “WYSE,” appears in white in the lower right corner.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
