About the Artwork

October Gold, Forest Pond is a 60" × 40" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting a forested hillside in autumn colour rising above a dark pond, with a tall evergreen in the foreground.

The hillside rising above the pond is built from short, rhythmic blocks of yellow, green, and orange, creating a dense impression of autumn foliage. Cooler blue and violet tones appear along the waterline and in small patches of sky visible near the top of the canvas. The pond itself sits in deep shadow, its dark surface broken only by narrow reflections of blue and green, contrasting with the brighter hillside above.

Charlesworth builds the hillside with layered, patterned brushwork, applying short blocks of colour to suggest dense vegetation across the slope. Thin linear marks define the trunks, branches, and fallen limbs threaded through the foliage. The tall evergreen in the foreground is rendered with denser, darker strokes than the surrounding hillside, and the pond's surface carries a heavily textured application of paint, with raised ridges visible where colour has been layered.

Rod Charlesworth is a Canadian painter based in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. Largely self-taught, with early studies at Okanagan College, his practice developed from an initial interest in Surrealism toward Impressionism. His subject matter spans landscapes and community scenes across Western and Northern Canada, with attention to colour and paint handling. Charlesworth's work is held in corporate and private collections in Canada and the United States and is represented by galleries across the country. October Gold, Forest Pond reflects his continued attention to old-growth forest interiors and autumn colour.

Accessibility Description

This vertical-format landscape painting shows a forested hillside above a pond in autumn. In the upper half of the canvas, a slope rises from right to left, covered with trees and clustered vegetation. The hillside is painted with short strokes of yellow, light green, orange, and pale violet, creating grouped patches of colour. The sky appears only in small areas along the top edge in pale blue and white. Below the slope, a dark pond runs horizontally across the middle of the painting. The water is primarily deep black, with narrow strokes of blue and green suggesting reflected light. A tall evergreen stands in the foreground on the left side of the composition. Its trunk is dark brown with muted orange tones, and branches extend outward, partially obscuring the view of the hillside and pond. The lower edge of the canvas contains dense shrubs and grasses in grouped strokes of green, yellow, and orange. Tree trunks and smaller branches throughout the scene are shown with thin vertical and diagonal lines in dark brown and black. No figures, animals, or buildings appear. The artist's signature is visible in the lower left corner.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
