About the Artwork
October Gold, Forest Pond is a 60" × 40" oil on canvas by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1959). Charlesworth’s paintings draw on childhood memories of the West Coast and many years spent observing the structure of old-growth forests. His practice often combines patterned brushwork with heightened seasonal colour, shaped by both direct experience and long-standing studio exploration.
In this vertical composition, a dark pond occupies the lower portion of the canvas while a slope of autumn foliage rises above it. Short, rhythmic blocks of yellow, green, and orange create the impression of dense vegetation, and a tall evergreen stands prominently in the foreground. Cooler blue and violet tones appear along the waterline and in small areas of sky, while thin linear marks define trunks, branches, and fallen limbs. The layered application of paint produces a textured surface that moves from deep shadow at the pond to brighter colour along the hillside.

Accessibility Description
This vertical-format landscape painting shows a forested hillside above a pond in autumn. In the upper half of the canvas, a slope rises from right to left, covered with trees and clustered vegetation. The hillside is painted with short strokes of yellow, light green, orange, and pale violet, creating grouped patches of colour. The sky appears only in small areas along the top edge in pale blue and white.
Below the slope, a dark pond runs horizontally across the middle of the painting. The water is primarily deep black, with narrow strokes of blue and green suggesting reflected light. A tall evergreen stands in the foreground on the left side of the composition. Its trunk is dark brown with muted orange tones, and branches extend outward, partially obscuring the view of the hillside and pond.
The lower edge of the canvas contains dense shrubs and grasses in grouped strokes of green, yellow, and orange. Tree trunks and smaller branches throughout the scene are shown with thin vertical and diagonal lines in dark brown and black. The surface displays visible brush marks and raised areas from layered paint. No figures, animals, or buildings appear. The artist’s signature is visible in the lower left corner.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
