About the Artwork
No One Has to Walk Home is a 30" × 30" oil on canvas by Peter Shostak (b. 1943). The composition presents a winter night hockey scene on a flooded prairie rink, with a snow-covered road leading down from the foreground to the ice and vehicles parked on either side.
At centre, a band of bright light stretches across the ice where a line of players moves through a game of hockey. A pale vehicle is parked to the left of the rink and a red truck stands at the right, reinforcing the title’s plainspoken statement that the players have a ride home waiting nearby. Beyond the rink, low fields and distant hills extend across the horizon in subdued blues and greys.
The upper half of the painting is occupied by a dark blue night sky filled with closely set stars. Shostak balances the large expanse of sky with the narrow illuminated strip of activity below, using the contrast between the open prairie and the concentrated area of play to define the structure of the scene.

Accessibility Description
This square painting shows a winter night scene viewed from a slightly elevated position. The upper half of the composition is filled with a very dark blue sky covered with many small stars. Below the sky, pale blue and grey fields stretch across the distance, with low hills and tree lines running along the horizon. At the centre of the painting, a rectangular outdoor hockey rink is brightly lit against the surrounding snow. A line of small figures stands and moves across the ice. Two vehicles are parked near the rink, one pale-coloured at left and one red at right. On both sides of the field, tall thin leafless trees rise in loose vertical groups. In the foreground, a snow-covered road curves down from the lower edge of the painting toward the rink. Parallel tire tracks are pressed into the road and remain visible through the snow. Fence posts, reddish-brown brush, and patches of dry grass appear along both sides of the road. The contrast between the dark sky, the pale snow, and the lit rink makes the centre activity easy to locate. The artist’s signature appears in the lower right corner.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
