About the Artwork
Last Light of Day is a 16" × 16" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting children tobogganing down a snowy hill toward a village at sunset.
The sky at the horizon carries warm tones of yellow and orange, visible between the bare trees, while the upper sky remains a cooler blue. The snow-covered hillside is rendered in shades of blue and white, picking up the warm light near the horizon and cooler tones higher up the slope, with the house windows adding small points of yellow light.
Charlesworth builds the snowy hillside with long, diagonal strokes of blue and white, describing the slope and the tracks left by the sleds. The bare trees are painted with dark, angular strokes reaching into the sky, while the houses in the middle ground are rendered with smaller, more compact marks. The tobogganing figures are described as small blocks of colour against the snow.
Rod Charlesworth is a Canadian painter based in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. Largely self-taught, with early studies at Okanagan College, his practice developed from an initial interest in Surrealism toward Impressionism. His subject matter spans landscapes and community scenes across Western and Northern Canada, with attention to colour and paint handling. Charlesworth's work is held in corporate and private collections in Canada and the United States and is represented by galleries across the country. Last Light of Day continues his recurring focus on children at play in winter light.

Accessibility Description
This square oil painting depicts children tobogganing at the end of the day. In the upper portion of the canvas, bare trees rise against a sky that shifts from blue at the top to warm yellow and orange near the horizon. A house with lit windows sits in the middle ground at the right, partially obscured by trees. Two adult figures walk together near the top of the snowy slope. The hillside descends diagonally through the centre of the composition, its surface built from layered strokes of blue and white marking the tracks of sleds. In the foreground, several children ride toboggans and snow tubes down the hill, their bodies rendered as small figures in colourful winter clothing, some seated and some lying forward on their sleds. One child stands at the bottom of the slope watching the others descend. The snow surface throughout carries a mix of cool blue shadow and warm light near the horizon. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner of the canvas. Faint smoke rises from the house chimney, drifting into the darkening sky above the rooftop.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
