About the Artwork
Joyous is a 10" × 10" oil painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1959) created on canvas. The painting presents a winter village scene where children join hands in a circle dance on snow-covered ground in front of three small houses beneath falling snow and a bright blue sky.
The composition centres on a group of children holding hands as they move in a circular dance. The figures wear brightly coloured winter clothing in reds, purples, blues, greens, oranges, and yellows, rendered with simple forms and rounded shapes. A small brown dog runs alongside the children. Behind the children stand three modest houses painted in brown, tan, and red with peaked roofs heavily laden with white snow. Blue accents outline the rooflines and frame windows that glow yellow with interior light. Tall, slender evergreen trees rise between and behind the buildings, their dark trunks supporting snow-covered branches that taper upward in characteristic conical forms. Smoke curls from chimneys in pale grey-white strokes. The sky above transitions from deep cobalt blue on the left to pale turquoise on the right, scattered with white dots representing falling snow.
Charlesworth employs thick impasto application throughout, building substantial texture in the snow-covered ground, architectural forms, and tree foliage. The canvas weave remains visible in some areas of the sky, while other passages show layered brushwork. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner.

Accessibility Description
A small square canvas showing a winter village scene. The sky fills the upper portion in graduating blue tones from deep cobalt on the left to pale turquoise on the right, with white dots scattered throughout representing falling snow. Three peaked-roof houses stand in a horizontal row across the middle ground. From left to right: a brown house with blue trim and roof, a tan-orange house in the centre, and a red house on the right. All three show white snow covering their roofs and yellow-lit windows. Pale grey-white smoke rises from chimneys. Tall, thin evergreen trees with snow-covered branches stand between and behind the houses, their dark trunks visible beneath white-laden foliage. In the foreground, seven small figures form a circle, holding hands. They wear brightly coloured winter clothing including purple, red, orange, yellow, blue, and green coats and hats. Their forms are simplified with rounded heads and bodies. A small brown dog runs beside the circle on the right. The ground is white with blue shadows. The artist's signature appears in blue paint in the lower left corner. The paint is applied thickly throughout with visible texture.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
