About the Artwork
Granite is a 6" × 6" acrylic on birch panel by Peter Wyse. The work presents a grey long-eared dog holding a white daisy against a clear blue background, with a small red ladybug near the top edge.
The close framing places the dog near the picture plane, with the rounded black nose, brown eyes, and simplified flower stem forming the main visual structure. Blue outline work and softly rubbed surface texture are visible around the figure, consistent with Wyse's layered acrylic process.

Accessibility Description
This square painting shows a grey, long-eared dog facing forward against a flat, light blue background. The dog fills most of the panel, with its head and body cropped close to the upper and lower edges. Its eyes are large, dark, and rounded, with small light highlights and brown rings that give them a clear focal presence. A large black nose occupies the lower centre of the composition. Long ears fall along both sides of the head, outlined by pale highlights and darker grey modelling. On the left side, a single daisy rises on a curved green stem, with white petals and a yellow centre. A small red ladybug with black spots sits near the top of the dog's head. The figure is edged with a thin blue contour line that separates it from the background. The painted surface shows light sanding marks and layered tonal variation, especially in the grey coat, the nose, and the blue field.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
