Founded in 1975, West End Gallery has been a cornerstone of Edmonton's arts community for five decades. Located in the heart of Alberta's capital, we take pride in our deep roots and our commitment to showcasing exceptional artwork from talented artists across Canada.

About the Artwork

Edge of the Gathering Sky is a 36" × 48" oil painting on canvas by Richard Cole (b. 1968), presenting a wide Prairie landscape in which a canola field in full bloom stretches beneath an advancing storm sky.

Cole positions the horizon low and level, stretching unbroken from edge to edge across the lower third of the composition. This placement grants the sky complete control over the picture plane. Above, the cloud formation is layered: pale grey-white forms at the upper register give way to deep teal and slate blue in the middle sky, deepening further to near-black Prussian blue where the cloud mass meets the land.

Richard Cole studied oil painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. Born in Edmonton, he has developed a sustained body of Prairie landscape work alongside his better-known Northwest Coast subjects. His paintings are held in corporate and private collections worldwide. Edge of the Gathering Sky is among the larger examples of this Prairie series and represents Cole's Prairie work at its most direct and resolved.

Accessibility Description

The painting is horizontal in orientation, wider than it is tall. The composition is divided into two primary zones by a straight, unbroken horizon line positioned in the lower third of the canvas. Above the horizon, storm clouds fill approximately two-thirds of the picture plane. At the top edge, pale grey-white cloud formations are rendered with soft, blended edges. Below these, the cloud mass deepens through teal and slate blue into near-black at the horizon line. Vertical streaks of pale blue-white descend through the darker cloud layer from upper centre toward the horizon, consistent with the appearance of distant precipitation. Below the horizon, a broad band of flat, bright yellow extends across the full width of the canvas. The yellow is even and smooth in the middle distance. At the bottom of the canvas, the field gives way to a band of textured brushwork. Individual flower heads in yellow-green are painted with raised impasto strokes against a darker green ground. The canvas edges are dark and finished, and the work is displayed without a frame.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
