About the Artwork
Dad Let Us Use the Truck is a 24" × 36" oil on canvas by Peter Shostak (b. 1943) created on canvas. The composition shows a winter night hockey scene on a flooded prairie rink, with a truck parked on the road beyond the ice.
Beyond the rink, open snow-covered fields extend toward a low horizon. Frosted trees cluster at left and right, framing the broad expanse of land. Above, the sky occupies nearly half the painting and is rendered in deep blue with scattered stars, while the open band of lighter blue near the horizon sets off the rink and road below.

Accessibility Description
This horizontal painting shows a winter night landscape with an outdoor hockey rink set within open prairie land. The overall composition is divided between a large dark blue sky above and a snow-covered field below. In the background, flat fields stretch across the horizon from left to right. The horizon line sits low in the painting. Frosted trees form dense clusters on both sides, with a broader stand at left and a narrower band at right. A pale strip of road runs across the midground behind the rink. A small truck with a dark body and bright red side panels is parked on the road near the right side. In the midground, the hockey rink occupies the centre of the painting. The ice is pale blue and grey. A line of players stands and skates across the rink, each holding a hockey stick. A low wooden board or rink edge appears near the right side of the ice. In the foreground, snow-covered grasses and fence posts frame the lower edge, especially at right. The ice curves toward the lower left corner, and the snow around it is marked with soft blue shadows. Small stars are scattered across the sky. The artist’s signature appears in the lower right corner.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
