About the Artwork

Nokum Making Bannock & Stew is a 16" x 20" acrylic painting by Allen Sapp. In this work, Sapp returns to a memory central to his childhood: the warmth and sustenance of meals prepared by his grandmother, whom he called Nokum. The scene captures two figures at camp, one tending to the fire while bannock is prepared nearby, the glowing flames illuminating the centre of the composition.

Sapp's restrained palette of earthy browns, ochres, and deep shadows frames the bright orange of the fire, creating a vivid focal point. The cooking tripod, with a pot suspended above the flames, becomes both a literal and symbolic centre of Cree family life: a place of nourishment, resilience, and continuity. Like all of Sapp's work, this piece was painted entirely from memory—without photographs or sketches—a practice that gives his paintings their intimate, first-person quality and preserves Cree traditions with clarity and affection. It invites viewers into a moment where food, care, and community come together in everyday life on the Prairies.

Accessibility Description

The painting shows an outdoor camp scene at dusk. In the centre foreground, a small fire burns brightly, its orange and yellow flames illuminating a black cooking pot suspended from a tripod of long poles. The glow of the fire creates a vivid circle of light against the surrounding earthy browns and muted tones of grass. To the right, a seated figure in a dark coat and hat watches the fire, their form angled slightly toward the flames. Behind the tripod, another figure wearing a red shirt and dark pants bends forward, working on a white cloth or dough spread across a surface, suggesting the preparation of bannock. Behind them, the canvas wall of a tent stretches diagonally upward, blending into the dark background. The composition balances the intimate details of food preparation with the broader suggestion of community life on the Prairies. Colours are earthy and subdued, with the fire as the brightest point in the scene.
