Founded in 1975, West End Gallery has been a cornerstone of Edmonton's arts community for five decades. Located in the heart of Alberta's capital, we take pride in our deep roots and our commitment to showcasing exceptional artwork from talented artists across Canada.

About the Artwork

Breaking Through is a 36" × 48" oil painting on canvas by Richard Cole (b. 1968), presenting a Prairie landscape in which a field of white daisy-form blossoms stretches beneath an advancing storm sky, with pale blue sky visible at the upper edge of the canvas.

The sky occupies the upper two-thirds of the canvas. A band of pale blue-grey remains at the very top, where the cloud cover has not yet closed. Below this, large white cumulus formations build across the upper-middle sky, their rounded forms rendered with soft internal shadow. The lower cloud mass deepens to near-black and dark teal-blue, pressing down toward the horizon. The horizon line runs level and unbroken across the lower third of the canvas, with a narrow band of pale yellow-gold visible at the field's edge just below the cloud base.

The foreground departs from Cole's canola series entirely. White daisy-form blossoms with yellow centres are distributed individually across a dark green grass ground, their petals rendered with precise, fine brushwork. Long grass stems lean in a consistent direction across the lower canvas, their directional handling giving the foreground a quality of wind-driven movement. The blossoms are most clearly articulated in the immediate foreground, softening into a general white mass as the field recedes toward the horizon.

Richard Cole studied oil painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. Born in Edmonton, he has developed a sustained body of Prairie landscape work alongside his better-known Northwest Coast subjects. His paintings are held in corporate and private collections worldwide. Breaking Through is among his Prairie works to move beyond the canola subject, presenting a white-flowering field as an alternative Prairie landscape under storm cover.

Accessibility Description

The painting is horizontal in orientation, wider than it is tall. A straight, unbroken horizon line runs across the lower third of the canvas. Above the horizon, storm cloud cover fills the majority of the picture plane. At the very top of the canvas, a narrow band of pale blue-grey sky is visible. Below this, large white cumulus formations are rendered with soft rounded forms and internal shadow. The lower cloud mass deepens to near-black and dark teal-blue, its base irregular above the horizon. A narrow band of pale yellow-gold is visible at the horizon line where the field meets the cloud base. Below the horizon, a field of white daisy-form blossoms with yellow centres extends across the full width of the canvas. Individual blossoms are rendered with precise brushwork in the foreground, their petals distinct against the dark green grass ground. Long grass stems lean consistently to one side across the lower canvas. The blossoms soften into a general white mass as the field recedes toward the horizon. The canvas edges are dark and finished, and the work is displayed without a frame.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
