Backyard in Deep Snow is an 18" × 14" oil on board by John Kasyn (1926–2008), one of Toronto's most significant visual historians, who preserved the city's working-class neighbourhoods before redevelopment transformed them. Kasyn worked from his own Kodachrome slide archive, photographing the modest backyards and lanes that revealed the everyday character of Toronto's residential streets throughout the 1960s–80s.

Looking into a snow-filled backyard, Kasyn captures the layered additions and utility spaces that defined working-class Toronto homes. The burnt orange stucco anchors the lower yard, its vivid colour striking against deep white snow, while cream and dark structures rise above under snow-laden roofs. Bare branches weave intricate patterns against a clear blue winter sky, and wooden fences frame the intimate space on both sides. Kasyn believed that winter revealed the 'true bones' of architecture, and his paintings now serve as irreplaceable records of Toronto's past, preserving the private corners of a city that has since undergone significant changes.
