About the Artwork

Aurora Night is a 36" × 48" oil on painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1959) on canvas. The painting presents a winter evening scene where children gather on a small frozen pond for a game of hockey beneath sweeping bands of northern lights.

In the foreground snowbanks and low shrubs frame the ice where several figures skate between two wooden nets. Beyond the rink a line of snow-covered coniferous trees rises along the shoreline, their branches layered with thick strokes of green and white. Behind them a frozen lake extends toward a distant treeline painted in muted blue tones.

Above the landscape broad arcs of green and blue light move across a star-filled sky. At the left edge of the composition a log cabin and smaller outbuilding sit near the water, with smoke rising from a chimney and a narrow path leading toward the pond. Charlesworth builds the scene through compact strokes that layer colour across the snow, trees, and sky.

Accessibility Description

This horizontal oil painting shows a winter landscape beneath the northern lights. The upper portion of the canvas contains a dark blue night sky filled with small white stars. Broad bands of pale green and blue light sweep across the sky in curved shapes, forming the aurora.

Below the sky a distant treeline stretches across the horizon in blue and purple tones. In front of this line stands a cluster of tall coniferous trees covered in snow. Their trunks appear as thin vertical lines while the branches are built from layered green and white strokes.

The middle ground shows a frozen lake with a small cleared area used as an outdoor hockey rink. Several small figures skate and play hockey between two wooden nets. The ice surface contains curved brushstrokes of blue and purple that suggest skate marks.

In the left portion of the painting a log cabin and a smaller green building sit on the snowy shoreline. A narrow path leads toward the ice. Snowbanks and shrubs occupy the foreground, painted with thick strokes of white, blue, and pale purple. The artist's signature appears in the lower right corner.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
