December, Old Town Yellowknife beautifully depicts the winter wonderland of Old Town Yellowknife, where history and artistry converge. Before the Yellowknife gold rush of the mid-1930s, this area was used by Dene hunters, and the iconic Pilot's Monument provided a lookout point over the bay. As gold was discovered along the shores of Yellowknife Bay, the peninsula became a staging ground for floatplanes and barges. What is now Old Town became the region's business hub, with hotels, stores, and cabins springing up.
In the 1950s, the development of an ordered "New Town" led to Old Town's decline. However, a new wave of residents, including young hippies in the 1970s, brought an artsy flair and tenacity to preserve the neighbourhood's heritage buildings.
