Double Exotica in Eckville is a 20" x 16" acrylic painting by Grant Leier that brings forth a lush portrait of two birds amidst an array of tropical flora. One of the birds has a pyrrole red crest with multicoloured spots and a cadmium-yellow body. Its wings are also multicoloured with highlights of cerulean blue. The acrylic paint is applied in swirls and geometric shapes, which adds to the exotic appeal of the painting. The second bird has a crest of blue and red stripes that complement its partner, and its wings are also adorned in various colours and patterns. The use of acrylics in opaque form and as washes allows for a deep saturation of colour and delicate gradients, giving the feathers and foliage a lifelike appearance...with a twist of Leier's humour.
