Premiere Online Exhibition Featuring: Paul Paquette West Coast Scenes May 2 – 14, 2020

Paul Paquette’s premiere exhibition with West End Gallery has been a long awaited and eagerly anticipated event. Having studied as a graphic designer before turning to professional painting in 2003, Paul has since dedicated himself to mastering the art of composition and design. Based in Squamish, Paul’s collection of new artworks are a painterly ode to the natural landscapes that can be found around southern British Columbia.

"The paintings in this show represent a good cross section of what interests me as a painter these days – not just subject wise but also the colours, textures, canvas shapes and sizes. I’ve always regarded my studio as being like a laboratory – a place to experiment and challenge myself. It is what keeps painting lively for me.

For me tree branches and leaves offer limitless possibilities for colours and compositions. They straddle the line between abstract and representational. The shapes create character, movement and tension. When I go hiking, I’m always seeing paintings in the trees. It’s why I always hike with a camera or sketch book.  A photograph often misses the essence of a scene – whereas with the sketch I can stress the important details and omit distractions. The texture of bark, pattern of twigs, shape of leaves, or the gesture of a trunk… all of these things begin to be resolved as I record them with pencil. It usually makes working on the final painting much easier."  - Paul Paquette (April, 2020)
