Due to a series of unfortunate events, Dana Irving's exhibition, "From Here to There," was displaced due to the temporary global lockdown in March of 2020. We now have an opportunity to revisit this genuinely fantastic exhibition with the relaunch of our gallery in Edmonton seven months later! With five new paintings to add to this collection, Dana Irving and the West End Gallery in Edmonton invites you to a re-opening of "From Here to There," Saturday, September 19, 2020!
Irving's painting style is borne of a deep affection for the Canadian landscape. From her childhood in rural BC surrounded by pine trees and lakes to her current home in Vancouver, where nature can be ignored by no one, the natural world has left an indelible mark on her sense of aesthetics and place.
"The pattern of going to a beautiful place and staying a while, seeing it in all kinds of weather, at all times of the day and then drawing and painting it, is a loop that I love to repeat. These are the best business trips ever! In the summer of 2019, I spent a week hiking around Canmore and Lake Louise in the Rockies and then a few weeks later, I made a 5-day kayak trip around Desolation Sound on the west coast of BC. This exhibition is the fruit of those two adventures. I am always amazed at how far I can go just one step (or paddle) at a time." –Dana Irving 2020

Paul Jorgensen attended the Vancouver School of Art, now Emily Carr School of Art and Design. His education was heavily influenced by the "hard edge" paintings (flat coloured panels in structured grids) in vogue. Still, the Group of Seven, The Impressionists and magazine illustrators provided him with inspiration, as they still do. These artists, in most cases, hint at a story in a specific landscape that intrigues him. He tries to incorporate an open gate, a glimpse of a car, or a path as it hints at a person in the scene that the viewer just missed. Paul Jorgensen’s latest collection of playful landscapes features the bright colours, intricate patterns and joyful vignettes he is known for. His unique approach to painting is enhanced by skewed perspectives and prolific use of intertwined shapes and forms revealed as lush gardens, secret paths and distant locations. Paul's narrative style further encourages the viewer to immerse themselves in his paintings and travel from the comfort of home.
