Driveway Shinny Game | 18" x 24"
About the Artwork
Driveway Shinny Game is a 18" × 24" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting children playing ice hockey on a snow-covered driveway lined with classic vehicles.
The composition is built around a red truck, which draws the eye toward an orange-hued house with yellow-lit windows beyond. A purple shack stands nearby, adding a further note of colour to the scene, alongside a meandering wooden fence. The bright colours of the parked vehicles stand out against the white of the snow-covered driveway, while the yellow-lit windows suggest the warm interior light of early evening set against the cooler tones of the winter scene outside.
Charlesworth applies his signature bold brushstrokes throughout the composition, using an impasto technique that builds up the paint on the canvas surface. This thick application of paint gives the snow, vehicles, and buildings a tangible, textured quality, adding physical depth to the scene beyond flat colour and line. The rich texture created by this technique is intended to draw the viewer into the cold air and muffled sounds of the driveway hockey game, grounding the whimsical subject matter in a tactile, hand-painted surface.

Accessibility Description
This oil painting shows a residential winter scene on a snow-covered driveway. In the background, a house painted in an orange tone stands with several windows lit in yellow, suggesting light from inside. A small shack painted purple sits nearby. Bare trees and a wooden fence run along the edge of the property, adding vertical lines to the composition. Several vintage vehicles in bright colours are parked along the driveway and street, including a red truck positioned prominently within the scene. The snow covering the driveway and surrounding ground is built up with thick, textured brushwork in white and pale tones. In the foreground, children are shown playing ice hockey, rendered as small figures engaged in the game. The paint throughout the composition is applied thickly, in a raised, textured manner that gives the surface a tactile quality, particularly visible in the snow and the parked vehicles. The overall palette combines the white of the snow with the red of the truck, the orange of the house, the yellow of its windows, and the purple of the shack. No signature is described in the existing product text.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
