About the Artwork

Placid Waters, NWT is a 20" × 24" oil on canvas painting by Rod Charlesworth (b. 1955), depicting a dusk lake scene in the Northwest Territories bordered by evergreens and autumn foliage.

The sky at dusk is painted with swirling clouds in blue, purple, yellow, and orange, reflecting the last light of the setting sun. In the foreground, robust evergreens stand alongside foliage in autumn reds, oranges, and yellows, contrasting with the cooler tones of the lake below. The lake's surface mirrors the sky's colours, carrying the blue, purple, yellow, and orange tones down into the water and creating a visual connection between the sky above and the water below.

Charlesworth uses expressive brush strokes and rich textures throughout the composition, with each element of the scene built up through visible paint handling. The evergreens, autumn foliage, and reflective water surface are each rendered with distinct textural qualities, giving the painting a tactile surface. This attention to texture is applied consistently across the sky, shoreline, and water, unifying the dusk scene through the artist's paint application rather than through line alone.

Accessibility Description

This oil painting shows a lake landscape at dusk. In the upper portion of the composition, the sky is painted with swirling clouds in blue, purple, yellow, and orange, suggesting the last light of the setting sun. In the middle distance, a lake fills much of the composition, its surface reflecting the same blue, purple, yellow, and orange tones seen in the sky above. Evergreen trees stand along the shoreline, their dark green forms contrasting with the coloured sky and water. In the foreground, foliage is rendered in autumn tones of red, orange, and yellow, set against the cooler colours of the lake. The paint throughout the composition is applied with visible brush strokes, giving the sky, water, evergreens, and foliage each a distinct textured surface. The evergreens are rendered with dense, layered strokes, while the foliage in the foreground shows shorter, more varied marks of colour. No specific figures, buildings, or wildlife are described in the existing product text, and no signature location is noted. The overall composition is built around the visual connection between the coloured sky and its reflection in the still lake below.

Artwork Care

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.

Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.

Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.

Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.

Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.

Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
