About the Artwork
Shelter in Bloom is a 36" × 48" oil painting on canvas by Richard Cole (b. 1968), presenting a Prairie landscape in which a red barn stands within a vast field of blooming canola beneath a cloud-filled sky.
The composition places the barn at small scale within the wide expanse of the canola field, the yellow blossoms extending from the foreground to the horizon on all sides. The barn's red profile sits against the lower sky, its scale reduced by the breadth of the surrounding field. Cloud cover fills the upper register, rendered in layered grey and white forms above the open Prairie.
The foreground canola is handled with textured brushwork, individual blossoms distinguishable at close range. The mid-ground field flattens into an even band of yellow as it recedes toward the horizon, where the barn and treeline mark the far distance. The paint handling shifts between the worked foreground surface and the smoother sky above.
Richard Cole studied oil painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. Born in Edmonton, he has developed a sustained body of Prairie landscape work alongside his better-known Northwest Coast subjects. His paintings are held in corporate and private collections worldwide. Shelter in Bloom is among his Prairie works to include an architectural subject within the canola field.

Accessibility Description
The painting is horizontal in orientation, wider than it is tall. A horizon line runs across the middle of the canvas. Below the horizon, a broad field of yellow canola blossoms extends across the full width of the canvas from foreground to the horizon line. A red barn of small scale is visible at the horizon, centred in the composition. In the foreground, individual canola blossoms are rendered with textured brushwork in yellow and yellow-green against a green ground. Above the horizon, cloud cover fills the upper register in layered grey and white forms. The canvas edges are dark and finished, and the work is displayed without a frame.

Artwork Care
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK
Display
Hang artwork away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air vents. UV exposure causes fading over time — UV-protective glazing is recommended for works on paper and photography. Avoid hanging artwork above fireplaces or in bathrooms where heat and humidity fluctuate.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use household cleaners, water, or solvents on the artwork surface. For oil paintings, a soft-bristle brush can be used lightly to remove surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for valuable or delicate pieces.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain a stable environment — ideally 18–22°C (65–72°F) with 40–55% relative humidity. Rapid changes in temperature or humidity can cause warping, cracking, or flaking. In Alberta’s dry climate, a humidifier can help protect your collection during winter months.
Handling & Moving
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Carry framed works by the sides of the frame — never by the hanging wire. When transporting, wrap in acid-free tissue or soft blankets and keep upright. For valuable pieces, professional art handlers and custom crating are recommended.
Storage
Store artwork upright in a cool, dry, dark space. Use acid-free materials for wrapping. Never store artwork in attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity are uncontrolled.
Insurance
We recommend insuring your art collection. An up-to-date appraisal (every 2–3 years) ensures proper coverage. West End Gallery offers professional appraisal services — please enquire for details.
