About the Artwork
A Rare Bird is a 12" x 12" acrylic painting by Grant Leier. A painting of a solitary sparrow, with its plumage, a canvas patterned in elaborate dots and overlapping colours, uses its environment to remain hidden. The bird's sharp, intelligent eye, a deep pool of onyx, peers out, keeping onlookers at bay of its secret world. Vivid oranges and reds blend seamlessly with splashes of cerulean and turquoise; each colour is applied with the meticulous layering technique that Leier's calling card. Beneath the sparrow, the foliage is abstracted into rhythmic patterns that mimic the flow of water and wind, creating a dynamic contrast to the bird's detailed plumage. The background's swirls and whirls are painted in earthy tones of olive and umber, accented with circular motifs that suggest the organic repetition found in nature. Encased in a hand-gold-leafed frame.
