We're excited to share the latest artwork from Annabelle Marquis. Known for her creative use of mixed media and collage, Marquis has shared new pieces that are full of texture, vivid colours, and layered meanings. Her new collection feels fresh while staying connected to the past, blending traditional and modern elements seamlessly.
Marquis’s approach to collage sets her work apart. She skillfully brings together different materials and textures, layering them in a way that gives each piece depth and invites exploration. You can sense the care in how the materials interact, creating a feeling that the artwork is alive with detail—you’re not just looking at it, you’re drawn into the layers within.
This collection continues her focus on layering. With each layer of paper or material, Marquis builds surfaces that pull you in for a closer look. The colours, patterns, and textures work together, revealing something new each time you engage with it.
What’s particularly striking about this collection is how Marquis incorporates art history into her contemporary work. She blends figures from famous historical paintings into her pieces, adding another level of meaning.
In Miroir Sur Notre histoire, for example, she includes two figures. The one on the left comes from Berthe Morisot’s Le Berceau, while the figure on the right is drawn from Paul Cézanne’s Portrait of Ambroise Vollard. These historical characters become part of the landscape, as though they’ve always belonged there. Marquis doesn’t push these references forward—they’re quietly placed, allowing you to reflect and discover them on your own.
This thoughtful mix of historical art creates a sense of continuity, showing how the past still influences the present. It’s a subtle but impactful way of combining different time periods and artistic styles within one frame.
Marquis’s work goes beyond just looking beautiful—it tells stories through the materials she uses and the historical elements she includes. The textures, colour shifts, and hidden references come together to create pieces that are rich with meaning. Each painting offers something unique, whether it’s through the figures that seem to emerge from the trees or the landscapes that change as you view them.
Another standout piece from the collection, Vortex, offers a dynamic swirl of textures and movement, where the interplay of colours creates an energetic and lively composition.
Whether you're familiar with her work or seeing it for the first time, these paintings have something special waiting for you.
