A broad blue sky fills most of the square canvas, deepening almost to black just above a straight, luminous strip of yellow. The field seems nearly continuous at that distance, but the foreground breaks into individual blossoms and slender green stems. Cole lets the edge between sky and field stay remarkably clear while the flowers below it become increasingly varied and textured.

The contrast works at two scales: from across the room, a spare arrangement of blue and yellow; closer in, a dense run of small flower heads, scattered highlights and vertical lines. The shift from open sky to closely worked foreground gives the painting its visual force without adding another landmark or figure.

Dimensions and Details

Title: The Bright Edge

Artist: Richard Cole

Size: 36" × 36" (91.4 × 91.4 cm)

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Surface: Canvas

Display: Gallery stretched and unframed, with finished black edges.

Acquisition Enquiries

The Bright Edge is an original oil on canvas painting offered through West End Gallery. The sky grades from medium blue at the top to very dark blue near the horizon. A straight yellow band runs across the canvas below that dark area. Toward the bottom, the yellow separates into many small flower heads over green stems and foliage. Individual stems rise from the lower edge, and the yellow paint becomes more textured and varied in the foreground.
