FAQs

HOW DOES THE APPRAISAL PROCESS WORK?

  1. Initial Consultation: Contact us via phone or email to discuss your appraisal needs.
  2. Evaluation: We'll schedule a meeting to evaluate your items in person or through high-quality photographs.
  3. Research: We will research comparable sales and auction data using our extensive market resources.
  4. Report Delivery: You will receive a digital (PDF) and paper copies.

WHAT DOES AN APPRAISAL INCLUDE?

Our appraisal provides:

  • An itemized description and valuation for each piece of artwork.
  • Tailored details for specific purposes, such as insurance or estate planning.
  • A detailed analysis based on current market value.

The report is formatted to meet industry standards and contains essential information.

WHY DO I NEED AN APPRAISAL?

Fine art appraisals are performed for several reasons, including:

  • Insurance: Establish replacement value.
  • Donation: Meet tax requirements for contributions to non-profits.

We typically recommend appraisals for artwork or collections valued over $2,500. For tax purposes, donations exceeding $5,000 may also require appraisals.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I UPDATE MY APPRAISALS?

We recommend updating your appraisals every 2–3 years as market values fluctuate. Significant changes in the art market or adding new works to your collection may warrant an earlier update to ensure accuracy.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR AN APPRAISAL?

To ensure a smooth appraisal process:

  • Gather any documentation you have, such as receipts, provenance, or past appraisals.
  • Photograph and organize your artwork for easy evaluation.
  • Provide relevant background information, such as purchase details or exhibition history.

WHAT IF I HAVE LIMITED INFORMATION ON SOME PIECES?

While having provenance, receipts, or documentation is helpful, we can conduct appraisals based on available information. We provide a professional opinion of value using:

  • Our extensive market expertise.
  • Access to auction and sales databases.

Note: Appraisers generally do not authenticate artwork.

HOW MUCH DOES AN APPRAISAL COST?

Fees are calculated based on:

  • The number of items.
  • The extent of work required.

Typical appraisal costs begin at $350 for smaller collections. For more extensive evaluations, contact us for a tailored quote.

CAN YOU GUARANTEE MY ITEMS WILL SELL FOR THE APPRAISED VALUE?

Appraised values represent a researched opinion of an item's worth but do not guarantee that the item will sell for that amount. Market conditions, sales methods, and buyer interest can influence the final sale price.

DO YOU KEEP A HISTORY OF MY PREVIOUS APPRAISALS?

No, we are not responsible for keeping your documents safe. Our service provides a PDF via email and a hard copy of your art appraisal. You should save a PDF copy of your appraisal on an external drive or print an extra copy for safekeeping.

WHAT WILL I RECEIVE FOR THE COST OF THE APPRAISAL?

You will receive a comprehensive appraisal report, including:

  • Detailed descriptions and valuations of each item.
  • A digital copy in PDF format.

Note: Appraisals are professional documents and do not include legal or tax advice.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY ITEM IS WORTH APPRAISING?

Contact us for a free consultation by phone or email. After discussing the details of your item(s), we can determine whether an appraisal is in your best interest.

DO INSURANCE COMPANIES RECOGNIZE YOUR APPRAISALS?

Yes, our appraisals are widely accepted by insurance providers. They meet industry standards and include all necessary information to establish the replacement value of your artwork.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I DISAGREE WITH THE APPRAISED VALUE?

Our goal is to ensure you understand the appraisal process and feel confident in the results provided. Please reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.

DO YOU APPRAISE ITEMS OTHER THAN ARTWORK?

We specialize in Canadian fine art appraisals, including paintings, sculptures, and blown glass. While we do not appraise items like wine or stamps, we can refer you to specialists in those areas.

CAN YOU AUTHENTICATE MY ARTWORK?

Authentication of historical or high-value items should be performed by recognized experts or scholars knowledgeable about the artist or the specific work. We generally do not authenticate artwork.
