Robert Genn
Recognized as one of Canada’s most accomplished painters, Robert Genn has become well-known internationally. While his subjects are universal – he has painted on location in many of the globe’s distant corners – he excels in portraying Canada. His paintings of Canada’s west coast and Rocky Mountains have received particular acclaim. Robert Genn was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1936. His formal training includes the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia, and the Art Center School in Los Angeles, California. Robert Genn’s technique includes a tradition of strong design with harmonic patterns of colour and form. His personal style is unmistakable. Grand themes are transposed onto small panels and canvases in a manner similar to the Group of Seven. His larger paintings are unique monuments which honour Canada and have formed an important part of the cultural heritage. He is represented by galleries across Canada and his paintings are in wide corporate and public collectorship throughout North America and Europe. Robert Genn’s autobiographical book, In Praise of Painting provides an insight into the progress and trials of a Canadian painter. Other Genn publications include The Dreamway, The Painter’s Keys, and Love Letters to Art. Building on this strong tradition of Canadian landscape painting, and with a keen sense for design and pattern, Genn succeeded in creating his own unique style and has gained wide recognition for his distinctive landscape paintings.
