Alan Bateman

Born in 1965 in Nigeria, Alan Bateman grew up to study at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. He Currently resides in Canning, Nova Scotia, with wife Holly Carr. With ineffable clarity, Bateman strides away from his father's portraits of nature, and paints portraits of contemporary stillness, steeped in mood, momentary light, and moored memory: diaphanous invitations to become the human element in a beginning and endless story. Alan paints mainly with acrylics on masonite, He prefers to paint on a very smooth surface before applying several layers of gesso. Usually Alan has already done several small sketches to create the composition and very little drawing is done onto the board.

I try to achieve the most with the least amount of brushwork. It is important to get the underlying textures started. I use large scruffy brushes to obtain the texture I want. My paint is quite thin and this is where the conducting of the work starts. My early concerns are light and the overall tone balanced.
